Youngblood #1-4

Youngblood #1-4 (1992-1993)

Hank Kanalz, Rob Liefeld

It’s interesting reading this today. There’s lofty goals considering the scope of the Youngblood team and universe, but as you may remember it was not a smooth start. The first issue is … not very good. It’s mainly due to Kanalz’s subpar dialogue. As a whole the book feels very much like someone’s first time out publishing a book. Imagine that. The good news is that Liefeld must have learned his lesson in the months leading to issue 2 because that book is top quality production and Liefeld’s solo writing eclipses Kanalz. The mini series suffers from the continual introduction to characters and teams that draw the attention from the team that you’re supposed to care about. Far too many of the characters are homages or … let’s say “derivative” of Big 2 properties. Couple these issues and then end the mini with “the 10-page conclusion to this issue’s story can be found in Brigade #4” is just bad form and infinite potential squandered.
