The End of the F***ing World (2017)
Netflix
TEOTFW (2011)
Fantagraphics
Charles Forsman
These are two completely different projects despite
containing most of the broad strokes and a ton of defining detail. The book,
which is serialized from 8 page chapters, is bold, quick, and bleak. They
series was able to incorporate all of that and ditch the ultimate fatalism of the
source material by making two changes. The first is changing the purpose and
character of the police detective. The second is allowing James to show signs
of becoming human. It's all in the nuances. Is it selling out to make a more
palatable series? Perhaps but it's a completely different animal there is no
harm in these two interpretations of the same story.
